When the Jeep Cherokee took a hiatus back in 2023, the model was struggling not only with age, but also low sales with Stellantis even closing the factory that built it (much to the chagrin of the United Auto Workers Union (UAW)
But after using the time to refocus and regroup, th Cherokee is making its return for the 2026 model year as Jeep attempts to bring much needed sales back into the brand while also giving the Compass some much needed back up in the lower end of the SUV segment.
Boxier look defines revival

The outgoing Cherokee attempted to infuse more aerodynamics into its design but the weird nose and creases completely missed the mark when compared to the iconic XJ model. This time around, Jeep designers did a good job paying homage to the original with the 2026 model getting a boxier look that comes with simpler styling.
The U-shaped LED daytime running lights are a nod to the XJ with the sharp breaks in the D-pillar in the rear being reminiscent of military grade jerry cans (we’ll admit some folks might miss that particular reference at first glance.)

Jeep chose to use the Overland model for the bulk of its press photos and that means you get to see a very luxurious interior that takes some of its vibes from the Grand Wagoneer S with the dashboard, center console, and the screens all being similar to what you see in the EV. All Cherokees get a 10.25-inch and 12.3-inch screen standard with the bigger infotainment screen getting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. Improving storage was also a priority and a new rotary shifter opens up storage in the center console.
Hybrid will come at launch
All 2026 Jeep Cherokee models will launch as a hybrid with the SUV getting a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that’s paired with a 350-volt hybrid system. The setup was designed exclusively for the Cherokee and for now it will also be the only powertrain available though look for Jeep to potentially add more engine options once the Cherokee has a chance to become more established in showrooms.
The combined setup produces 210 hp and 230 lb-ft of torque and while that might seem like pretty paltry figures, Stellantis says the SUV can get 37 combined mpg, go 500 miles before it needs a fill up and can make the sprint to 60 mph in 8.3 seconds. The system is powered by a 1.08 kWh battery pack and while this isn’t a PHEV the battery gets its juice from both the engine and regenerative braking.

The Cherokee is also on the STLA Large Car architecture and the new underpinnings not only make the SUV larger but also offer more interior and cargo space than before. The new Cherokee comes equipped with Jeep’s Active Drive I 4×4 system, which includes a rear-axle disconnect and four drive modes: Auto, Sport, Snow, and Mud/Sand.
It also boasts best-in-class approach and departure angles—19.6 and 29.4 degrees, respectively—along with 8.0 inches of ground clearance and an 18.8-degree breakover angle. These credentials are already pretty potent but the soon to be released Trailhawk variant promises to amp them up even more.
When can I buy one?

If the 2026 Cherokee sounds like your cup of tea, you’ll have to wait just a bit longer to get your hands on it with Jeep saying it will go on sale later this year. The Limited and the Overland trims will arrive first with these models starting at $44,490 and $47,990 respectively. The base Cherokee and Laredo models will arrive next year with these models starting at $38,990 and $41,990.
