The Ineos Grenadier was designed for buyers who wanted to add a pinch of old-school charm to their off-road driving experience. One of these indviduals was the CEO of Ineos Jim Ratcliffe who wanted an old-school Land Rover but when the company told him they wern’t making it anymore, Ratcliffe set out on building his own interpretation of the trusty SUV.

The Grenadier has proven to be a strong mover for the company with the SUV and its pickup counterpart the Quartermaster building up a strong following of loyal buyers. However, there are always consumers who want more of everything and the company has followed through with its latest creation, the Grenadier Trialmaster X Letech.

Upgrades in all the right places

Unlike other Grenadier models we have seen from the comapny, Ineos chose to collaborate with an external partner for this model with the company enlisting the services of German tuner Letech. Letech is well known for its extensive history in modifying Mercedes-G-Class SUVs with these creations being sold under its sub-brand Lennson. The tuner got involved with Ineos in 2021 when the tuner became a service and paid sales partner for Ineos.

As a result, this Grenadier based creation builds on some of the things the tuner has learned from these models including beefy portal axles and increased ground clearance to help the rig have better ground clearance. The model originally started as a concept based on the Quartermaster pickup but Ineos and Letech have now applied the concept’s unique personality to the SUV.

In addition to the aforementioned portal axles, the X also gets offset wheel hubs, 18-inch beadlock wheels, and massive 37-inch BF Goodrich mud-terrain tires with the whole setup allowing the SUV to have a wading depth of 41.3 inches which puts it in elite company when it comes to that particular stat. According to the company, the new setup results in a “wider footprint, optimised weight distribution, greater wheel travel and improved axle articulation”, making the Grenadier more capable in “deep sand, severely flooded terrain or extremely rocky environments”.

In addition to the mechanical upgrades, the SUV also gets an impressive suite of accessories including a front mounted winch, roof mounted LED spotlights, a large roof rack and wider fenders to help accomodate the extra width.

Carryover performance

With all the upgrades the TrialMaster X Letech brings to the table, Ineos chose to maintain the stick 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six it gets from BMW. The engine can run on gasoline or diesel but it will be interesting to see how the 3.0-liter copes with the extra weight since neither Ineos or Letech confirmed the engine will get more power for this particular application. However, Ineos says the SUV version can tow up to 7,716 lbs with the Quartermaster variant hauling up to 1,415 lbs of stuff which is pretty impressive in its own right.

When can I buy one?

If you’re interested in buying one of these rigs for yourself, your location will play a large part in whether your able to buy one or not. These Letechs are not available in the U.S. but if you’re in Europe, you’re in luck with the base SUV version starting at €170,000 ($199,000) before VAT and local taxes with the Quartermaster version adding an extra €1,000 ($1,200) to the sticker price.

The company is currently taking orders in Germany (Letech’s home market) but Ineos says that availability of these models will “quickly expand to other key markets”. It will be interesting to see if the model comes stateside but look for Ineos to potentially explore other markets first including the Middle East which has a strong SUV market and a large pool of wealthy buyers eager to go all-in on the Letech sourced upgrades.
