Mercedes-Benz is currently channeling some of its focus into smaller engines and EV powertrains but it can be easy to forget that Mercedes is also known for having a reputation for producing bespoke V8s that are often among the most powerful in the industry.

A new patent appears to confirm that Mercedes is carrying on with business as usual but that this engine will bring a higher level of noise and fun to consumers.

New engine rewrites the script with novel tech

The new engine was revealed in a patent filing the company recently submitted and a key trait is it will have four “exhaust lines” with the engine using this setup to pair cylinders with other ones that are out of sync. In typical Mercedes-Benz fashion, this setup is very complicated but look past the patent’s text and you’ll see that the pairing starts with the first cylinder being paired with the third cylinder while the second line pairs the second cylinder with the fifth one.

Six and eight and seven and four will also be combined but two of these lines will actually cross the stream and bridge the gap between the vee’s in the engine. The combined pairings also help drive the turbocharger with each setup being responsible for powering one turbo.

Pumping up the decibels

The sheer amount of complexity here may seem daunting, but there’s actually a method to the madness with the company saying that it helps enhance engine noise stating “In particular, the invention makes it possible to generate the typical so-called V8 blood in the fired operation of the V8 engine, so that the V8 engine generates a particularly pleasant and powerful noise, in particular during its fired operation, for a person in the environment of the V8 engine.”

This is reflected in the revised firing order (1-5-4-8-3-7-2-6) with the new order promising to separate the combustion pulses. The engine will also be a flat plane design with this layout being picked for improved efficiency and power while the “Hot Vee” design puts some of the internals out of sight for most observers.

There’s a catch

The patented V8 promises to be a showstopper but one rather interesting issue that is acknowledged by Benz in its patent is giving the company pause. It’s not what you would expect either with the firm stating the design affects”the typical V8 blubber, so that usually an embossed V8 blood can not be generated.”

Look for Benz to find a way to remedy that minor detail but it remains to be seen if the V8 will actually enter production. The company has neither confirmed nor denied it’s given the green light for it and patent filings are not always clear indicators of a firm’s long-term production plans.

Either way, we look forward to hearing more since the V8 would allow Benz to write a new chapter in its V8 history while also making enough sound for all to enjoy.
