When you look at the current state of new car prices these days, it can feel like you’re in an alternate universe, with the average price of a new vehicle seemingly out of reach for more buyers than ever (this author included)

But if you’re willing to look under every proverbial stone in your new car search, there are still a few gems to be had. One of them is the 2026 Hyundai Venue, the company’s cheapest CUV entry. But is it still a must-have for consumers?

Venue is a time machine to the past

With more of Hyundai’s products embracing the “Art of Steel” design language, the Venue’s older lines can feel like you’re going back into the past. Hyundai is applying a light touch to the Venue for 2026 with its updates, but the exterior is carried over unchanged. The front end is still a love-it-or-hate-it affair, but the boxy profile and the clean rear end do help improve things somewhat.

The main update for 2026 is that the Limited model has been scrubbed and the SEL model is now the new range-topper in the family. Hyundai still offers two-tone colors for the Venue in an attempt to retain its edgy style. But with the slightly more expensive Kona getting heavily revamped a few years ago, the case to own a Venue can be a tough one to ponder for some consumers.

Functional Venue interior is starting to show some wrinkles

Slip inside, and you’ll find the Venue’s cabin is deceptively roomy. While the cabin design itself is far from flashy, it’s sturdy and functional. SEL models like our tester get heated front seats, and the climate control system is smooth and efficient. Buyers looking for luxury features like a heated steering wheel are best directed to other models like the Hyundai Kona.

With the front seats offering a cozy atmosphere, it’s surprising to see the second row can be cramped for taller passengers. Those passengers will find leg and headroom very tight, especially if they have a tall driver or front passenger in front of them. Shorter passengers fare slightly better when it comes to outright room. The second-row seats also allow the Venue to have 19 cubic feet of space with the seats up. Fold them down, and it expands to 32 cubic feet, which is a commendable figure in the CUV market. The main thing that buyers will notice is that the Venue’s interior is also showing its age, with the infotainment system being a prominent offender.

Sensible Performance

Performance for the 2026 Hyundai Venue continues to come from a naturally aspirated four-cylinder that makes 121 hp and is mated to a CVT. The Venue was never known for outright performance, and this trend continues for 2026 with our tester needing a sluggish 8.7 seconds to make the sprint to 60 mph.

This lack of muscle was evident on the freeway with our tester feeling anemic on some sections of I-75 we traveled during its visit. But while its freeway manners leave alot to be desired, the Venue made up for it in urban commuting with the CUV feeling more composed when cruising at urban speeds. The steering is numb, but that’s almost expected in its budget-focused segment. A major caveat here is the Venue is front-wheel drive only, with no all-wheel drive system available. In exchange, the Venue gets 29 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the freeway.

Value Quotient

Pricing for the 2026 Hyundai Venue starts at $20,550 for the base SE version. Move up into an SEL with two-tone roof, and the price creeps up to $22,600. Last but not least is the range-topping SEL, with those versions of the Venue starting at $22,825. Our example came with taxes and fees as well as minor options, which helped push the price over $25,000.

This pricing is still a very tempting selling point for the Venue despite its age, and Hyundai has given the Venue an impressive suite of standard equipment for the dollar. However, the Venue is also up against a growing pool of rivals including the Nissan Kicks. The Kicks gets access to all-wheel drive, and it also benefits from newer technology that is missing from the Venue. Despite that, look for the Venue to continue being a valuable gateway for Hyundai in a changing market where it low price tag is a welcome contrast to what’s going on in the rest of the automotive industry.
