Toyota’s Trailhunter lineup was the brand’s first serious attempt at overlanding, but the main issue was that while the Tacoma and 4Runner Trailhunters were good models in their own right, you could only get two of them.

The missing third piece has now been revealed, with Toyota unveiling the all-new 2027 Tundra Trailhunter which will not only be the new overlander in the family, but also spearhead several updates for 2027 that aim to change it for the better.

Trailhunter fills the void

A major update here on the 2027 Tundra is the appearance of an all-new Trailhunter model. Unlike the TRD PRO model, the new Trailhunter is not meant for high-speed romps through the desert. Instead, it prefers to take a more relaxed drive through the backwoods, and comes with a number of upgrades to help make that possible.

The Trailhunter starts life as an SR5 grade Tundra but adds off-road upgrades like a lifted Old Man Emu Suspension, Michelin LTX off-road tires, steel front recovery hooks, additional skid plates, and the Multi-Terrain Select System.

The functional upgrades are also paired with styling tweaks with the Trailhunter getting a version of the Tundra’s reworked front end and plenty of badging. Toyota chose to not reveal what engine is lurking underneath the hood, but with all Tundra’s being V6 powered, the mystery is not as grand as it seems, and the SR5’s version of the V6 will most likely be selected for Trailhunter duty.

A broader suite of updates

In addition to the appearance of the rugged Trailhunter model, the Tundra is also going under the knife for 2027 in a few areas. The interior has been touched up, and all models now get a larger 14.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a built-in dash camera (dubbed Driver Recorder) by the company. A newly standard AT&T 5G connection system is along for the ride too to help up the truck’s infotainment game.

The grille mounted LED lightbar has been upgraded, and Toyota confirmed it will also be offering optional Rigid foglights for improved visibility at night. The updates come at a key time for the Tundra, which is still navigating the aftermath of a massive engine recall that has helped put a wet blanket on its sales as of late.

When can I buy one?

Toyota chose to not to release pricing for the 2027 Trailhunter or other members of the 2027 Tundra family. However, look for the broader pricing to not change too much from 2026 in terms of movement, with the newly added Trailhunter being the main exception to this rule.
