The Toyota GR86 has been long known for its ability to be a spirited scamp when pressed on the track with the two-door banking its reputation on lightweight handling prowess versus outright muscle.

While this has allowed the GR to be a consistent seller for Toyota, it also makes you wonder what would happen of the GR86 would move to the world of rallying and take on the road less traveled? Kuhl Racing is attempting to answer this question with its latest creation, the GR86 OutRoad.

Rally bred and eager to please

As the name implies, the OutRoad is all about the rally life and gives the GR86 a major overhaul with the car getting a lifted suspension that raises the ride height by 3.0-inches with an optional hydraulic system raising it even higher by an extra 1.6-inches with the setup also allowing the car to be lowered back down for driving.

The exterior styling gets chunky fender flares to help fit the bigger tires in while the front and rear bumpers are redone to improve approach and departure angles. Skid plates protect the vulnerable bits while roof mounted rally lights, cladding, and roof rails add the proverbial cherry on top to the transformation.

Performance for the OutRoad comes from the existing 2.4-liter flat-four but an optional turbocharger dds 50 more horses to the rally package. Like the standard GR86, buyers can still choose from either a six-speed automatic or a manual gearbox.

A concept you can buy

The hero car that Kuhl Racing chose to use in its press images is technically a concept, but unlike other show cars, it won’t stay a stage darling for long with Kuhl reps saying they will bring a production version of the OutRoad to consumers.

The main catch is that it will only go on sale in Japan with other markets (including the U.S.) being left out. However, if you are fortunate enough to live in Japan, Kuhl will not only offer the OutRoad as a whole  ¥4,150,000 ($26,000) package but also offer many of the components individually.

This is great for budget buyers who not only want to save some money, but also want to build up the car in stages to either reach the fully equipped OutRoad or something in between that suits their tastes. The GR86 OutRoad will make its debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January.
