Stellantis has been on a slow retreat away from EVs with the company recently confirming the cancellation of the all-electric Ram 1500 REV (The REV name was reassigned to the EREV version.) It appears that this retreat has claimed another victim with Dodge reportedly canceling the Charger Daytona Banshee.

It would have succeeded the Hellcat

The possible cancellation is according to a report by Mopar Insiders which claims it received word of the axing from suppliers who say they are no longer working on the car’s EV systems. The Banshee version was seemingly teased a few years ago at Roadkill Nights with the Banshee concept vehicle. While the concept made cool noises and was more or less a visual showpiece, it did tease a potential future where electrification would add a new edge to the muscle car segment.

It even promised a novel tri-motor system that would allow it to make a combined system output of 800 horsepower. However, Dodge learned very quickly that it’s not wise to mess with what’s not broken with the news being rewarded with a massive dip in sales.

EVs are not going away completely

With the apparent demise of the Banshee, the most powerful CHarger EV that buyers can get their hands on right now is the Charger Daytona Scat Pack. These Chargers lose a motor, but they still make a respectable 670 hp which allows them to make the sprint to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds. The Scat Pack is also holding down the fort at the moment with Dodge “postponing” (we think they axed it) the Daytona R/T due to moribund sales.

The bigger question is whether the SRT Hellcat would potentially make a return to take advantage of this recent shift in corporate strategy. Dodge execs have said in the past that the Hemi does fit in the Charger (after briefly saying putting one in would require complex re-engineering.) and the Durango SRT Hellcat’s longevity suggests demand for the 6.2 liter Hellcat Hemi V8 is still present and abundant. The old Hellcats certainly delivered the goods when it came to sales and it will be interesting to see if Dodge is willing to tap that proverbial well once again in the future.
