Sometimes, style can be a potent selling point for a hybrid vehicle with many automakers recently beginning to find their design mojo when it comes to making their current crop of hybrid powered offerings.
One of these automakers is Toyota with the Japanese auto giant using the Nightshade trim to add a sinister touch of design and fun into whatever vehicle it’s equipped to. The Corolla Cross is one of the latest to get a Nightshade model but this time we feel that the Nightshade treatment is the perfect fit for the Corolla Cross.
Nightshade spearheads minor updates for 2025

The Nightshade model may seem like a big change but Toyota is keeping the bulk of the updates light on the Corolla Cross light for 2025 with the bulk of them being focused on new colors. Our tester arrived with a new Soul Red hue with the roof being painted in Midnight Black Metallic. Other trims get a Polymetal Grey treatment.
Our tester arrived with the former and also benefited from the black-out treatment provided by the Nightshade. For those that have seen the package on other Toyota models over the years, the same core script is carried over with our tester getting blacked-out mirror caps, wheels, badging, and even black-tinged head and taillights.

The Nightshade package has proven to be very popular with consumers and Toyota is also hoping that resurgent demand for hybrids like the Corolla Cross will help the package get a higher profile when it comes to the company’s overall sales numbers.
Comfortable interior continues to be Corolla Cross strong suit

Like before, the interior of the Corolla Cross Hybrid (and other Corolla Crosses too) continues to follow the same basic template laid out by the Corolla four-door sedan. It’s simple and highly functional with the dash design, the seats and even the control layout all being copy and pasted into the CUV. The Cross stands out though by offering more cargo room with the CUV being able to swallow up to 21.5 cubic feet of cargo behind the second row. Folding those seats down allows the Toyota to haul bulkier items.
Nightshade models like our tester get black/red cloth upholstery, heated front seats and more with the second-row passengers also getting their own flip-down center console. Lower trims are decidedly more basic and the Nightshade package is also limited to higher trims but this trade-off is balanced out by the low pricing ladder.

An 8.0-inch infotainment system is on the small end of the scale when it comes to infotainment systems in its segment but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard as is satellite radio. Buyers looking to add a wireless phone charging pad, rear charging ports, and the JBL Premium audio system will have to check them off in the options list.
Fuel economy steers this ship

The 2025 updates left the performance hardware unchanged with all Hybrid models continuing to be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder that’s paired with three electric motors for a combined system output of 196 hp. While the Corolla Cross hybrid will never be mistaken for a GR Corolla (despite the blacked-out Nightshade treatment doing its best to project that image) Our tester still proved to be pretty pokey off the line with our Nightshade only needing 7.3 seconds to make the sprint to 60 mph.

Handling is nothing to write home about but the Hybrid’s strong fuel economy numbers stand out with the EPA saying the Corolla Cross hybrid gets 45/38 mpg in city/freeway driving. That’s higher than the non-hybrid version and it also doesn’t hurt either the CUV offers a pleasant ride and does a fairly reasonable job keeping outside noises out of the cabin at freeway speeds.
Value Quotient

The 2026 Toyota Nightshade is just now beginning to make its way to showrooms, but with this rollout being in the early phases, there are still plenty of 2025 models to choose from. The Nightshade is a bridge between the base Hybrid and the Hybrid XSE model with this tweener stance being reflected in its base $30,740 sticker.

Buyers looking to get the Nightshade will have to move quickly with the model not returning to the Corolla Cross lineup for 2026. However, if you’re lucky and find a Nightshade for your driveway you will be pleasantly rewarded with a CUV that can help reduce how much you spend at the pump while still providing the core CUV essentials for family hauling duty.
