Subaru is currently in the middle of expanding its presence in the hybrid vehicle market but it can be easy to forget that the brand is also competing in the EV market with the Solterra and the Trailseeker.

These two are about to get some backup though with the company announcing the arrival of the 2026 Uncharted EV

Uncharted expands Subaru’s EV portfolio

The Uncharted is the third member of Subaru’s EV lineup and it will also be the smallest with the model being placed below the bigger Solterra and Trailseeker. This entry-level placement is also reflected in its source material with the Uncharted being based on the Toyota CH-R. As a result, the core styling is shared with the Toyota but Uncharted models get unique Subaru inspired styling and other minor alterations.

Slip inside and the cabin is largely carried over from the CH-R with the odd square-shaped steering wheel (Austin Allegro anyone?) serving as a potent visual statement. A 7-inch digital instrument cluster is also standard with the instruments being paired with a 14-inch infotainment screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard and the Uncharted also comes with dual wireless phone charging pads.

The standard model is well equipped with heated seats, heated outside mirrors, a power tailgate and an impressive roster of active safety assist features. Sport models add a heated steering wheel and surround view cameras with the range-topping GT adding cooling capability to the front seats, heated rear seats, a Harmon Kardon premium audio system and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Two flavors of performance

Subaru said it will be offering the Uncharted in two flavors. The base front-wheel drive models will be built in limited numbers with these versions getting a front-mounted electric motor that produces 221 hp. The company expects the bulk of sales to be concentrated into the pricier Sport and GT models with these two getting a dual-motor setup that makes a combined system output of 338 hp which is enough to send the EV to 60 mph in 5.0-seconds which is quicker than the WRX.

A 74.4 kWh battery pack is standard on all models with the front-wheel drive Premium getting 300 miles of range between charges. The Uncharted Sport and GT models are slightly heavier due to their dual-motor layout and their range dips slightly to 290 miles. It will also come with a Tesla-style NACS charging port standard, and it’s capable of 150 kW of charging for a 10-80% charge time of around 30 minutes. These figures are on par for the segment.

Subaru says it developed a unique chassis tune for the Uncharted that focuses on off-road performance but until we get a chance to see how the Uncharted does on the road less traveled, look for most of them to be used in urban environments alongside their CH-R cousins.

Uncharted EV will enter uncharted pricing territory

Subaru says the 2026 Uncharted EV will begin making its way to dealerships early next year with pricing information being released closer to launch. It will be interesting to see how all of this shapes up though with tariffs and the impending end of EV credits potentially creating roadblocks for the companies.

The Uncharted could be a make it or break it model for Subaru’s EV ambitions since it would be considered the proverbial glue that helps hold it all together due to its gateway status.
