Hyundai has taken the bold step of issuing a stop sale for certain Palisade trim levels after it learned of a fatal accident involving a small child with the company also finalizing the details for a recall affecting over 68,000 Palisades to try and fix the problem.

Fatal accident prompts rapid response from Hyundai

Both the stop sale order and the accompanying recall come after Hyundai learned of a fatal incident involving a little girl which took place on March 7th in Ohio.

Hyundai’s press release says it’s still learning about what exactly happened stating it “does not yet have the full details and the incident is still under investigation,” while extending “its deepest sympathies to her family.”

Only two trim levels affected

The recall affecting 68,500 of these SUVs focuses on the Limited and Calligraphy models with these two trims having power-folding second and third row seats. Hyundai says the seats in these vehicles may not detect objects or people in them which unfortunately led to the tragic result in Ohio on March 7th.

The bulk of the affected Palisades are in the United States with 60,515 of them covered by this upcoming recall. Cross the border and and you’ll find an additional 7,967 in Canada that are also affected. Hyundai is working on a fix for the problem but said it will be releasing an Over The Air Update (OTA) to “enhance the system’s response to contact with occupants or objects, introduce additional operating safeguards, and enhance overall system safety.”

This update should be available in March, but Hyundai will also contact impacted Palisade owners by phone, email, or other communication channels advising them to use caution when operating the seats.
