When it comes to the world of performance-focused compacts, few have the rowdy spirit that has come to define the Elantra N. If you were to look at other examples of the Hyundai Elantra, the N’s transformation from a stylish but mellow-minded city commuter into a track-ready gremlin is the equivalent of exposing it to a full moon.

The N promises to bring plenty of performance and attitude to buyers, but is it still the spunky underdog in the segment? Or has it lost some of its independent nature as it prepares to lay the groundwork for the next-generation Elantra?

What’s new for 2026?

At first glance, it might seem the Elantra escaped with very minimal updates, with standard models like our tester being carried over mostly unchanged. That’s good since our tester even came with Hyundai’s familiar Performance Blue paint.

However, Hyundai recently unleashed the TCR Edition Elantra N. While it doesn’t get any extra power, Hyundai chose to focus on making other upgrades, including a larger rear wing, forged wheels, upgraded front brakes with four-piece monoblock calipers, and interior upgrades. We’re glad Hyundai is leaving the Elantra N alone since it’s still one of the most compelling models in Hyundai’s lineup. It’s also a good seller, and the last thing Hyundai needs is to rock the boat too much.

Elantra N interior continues to blend comfort and sport

The Elantra N’s interior continues to be a balanced mixture of comfort and sportiness. The front sport seats are heavily bolstered and get leather-trimmed upholstery, while the N logos glow at night when the N is parked. The driver-centric cabin puts many controls within easy reach of the driver. The infotainment system is also easy to use, and the N model gets a special N mode that allows you to tailor various aspects of the car to suit the driver’s tastes.

The second-row seats can haul passengers in a pinch, but, as with other performance compact models, they’re best left folded down to maximize trunk space. When viewed as a whole, the Elantra N feels like it’s the most purposeful player in the room. The theming helps it lock into the track scene, and the Elantra also has more personality than the Honda Civic Si and the Volkswagen GTI.

Raucous Performance

Performance for the Elantra N is still the same desirable ingredients as before, with all models being powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that makes 275 hp and allows the N to make the dash to 60 mph in under 5.8 seconds. Our tester arrived with the eight-speed DCT, but buyers looking to shift the gears themselves can get a six-speed manual instead.

Front-wheel drive is also standard, but our tester rewarded us with secure handling, and when you use the N-Grin Shift button, power temporarily goes up to 286 hp. The N also has a power advantage over the Jetta GLI, and it also manages to outhandle the VW in sharp corners.

The only minor complaint we had during our time with the N was its DCT. It’s great in most forms of driving, but it occasionally clunked its way through the first few gears when engaged in stop-and-go driving. Models like our tester can get 20 mpg in city driving and 27 mpg in freeway driving. With fuel prices remaining elevated, the Elantra N is one of a few that can also run on regular 87 gas, which can help drivers save some fuel money. But Hyundai says premium is required for full power and the engine’s “octane learn” feature.

Value Quotient

Pricing for the 2026 Hyundai Elantra N starts at $35,300 for the base manual-equipped model. Swapping it out for the DCT adds $1500 to the sticker, with our tester crossing the $37,000 barrier.

This is still a solid price for a pretty potent performance compact, and it blows rivals like the VW GLI out of the water when it comes to value. It’s also hard to ignore the fact that the Elantra N brings an impressive amount of upgrades and standard equipment to buyers. With the next-generation Elantra preparing to eventually make its way to U.S. shores, it will be interesting to see what the next-gen N will bring and how it will build on the solid foundations laid out by the current-generation one.
