Jaguar made waves when it did a shocking reboot of its identity and its mission with the British luxury brand sacrificing nearly all of its lineup (the creaky F-Pace just recently ended production) for an all-in gamble on EVs.

Ill timing and an equally bad reception from dealerships and the public (despite Jag’s best efforts at making lemonade out of the situation) made it clear that the company’s reboot didn’t go as planned. A new report suggests that Jaguar might be putting in an ICE-powered powerplant in its upcoming Grand Tourer after all.

Jag’s reported concession will not be a return to form

According to a report from The Times there are concerns within the brand that the final range numbers for the EV will be below initial projections. While the reported battery pack is expected to be large, even the ultra-wealthy buyers Jaguar is shooting for will stay away and stick with their Bentleys and other rivals if its range figures are too low.

To help solve this, the report suggests Jaguar is exploring adding a gasoline engine into the new EV (tentatively known as the Type 00.) Enthusiasts hoping this will morph into a return to form where V6s and V8s ruled the land will be disappointed. Instead, the proposed engine would serve as a generator and help charge the battery when out on the move.

Jaguar has quoted initial range estimates of over 400 miles, range anxiety is always a lingering element of concern for buyers. The gasoline generator would help curb these fears and also allow Jaguar to hit some of the other goals it has for the Type 00 including the ability to cover up to 684 miles before it needs a charge/fill up. If Jaguar is looking to indeed embrace this setup, look for it to be a later addition since the all-electric model would continue to serve as the inaugural launch variant.

Jaguar has bigger problems on its plate

The Type 00 is the proverbial moonshot for Jaguar but it also comes at a time when Jaguar and JLR as a whole are facing some serious problems. A growing number of dealerships are getting frustrated about the lack of new Jaguar models to sell with Land Rover expected to shoulder the bulk of the weight when it comes to keeping the lights on. Some dealerships have already dropped Jaguar outright reverting back to standalone Land Rover stores despite a period when JLR attempted to unify the two brands under one roof at the store level.

In addition to rising tensions between it and dealerships, Jaguar is still recovering from the after effects of a massive cyber attack that caused it to report massive losses, shut down production for a brief period last year, and rapidly became the biggest cyber event in British history with the attack reportedly costing the British economy £1.9 billion.

As a result, JLR is doing everything it can to ensure its plan to reinvent itself will go on without any further hiccups. The addition of the range-extender would add a premium to the price and with Jag saying the production version of the Type 00 would go after Bentleys and other ultra-luxury marques, expect the price tag to be reflective of this once production kicks off with the EV potentially starting at $120,000.
