The 2027 Chevrolet Bolt made its debut a few months ago with the EV bringing new mechanical upgrades and interior tech while retaining a familiar wrapper that was meant to draw in old Bolt owners.
However, a new report suggests this model was merely the opening play in a broader plan to expand GM’s presence in the affordable EV sector with the plan ultimately spawning a new family of budget friendly EVs.
Planned EV family comes at a time when GM needs them the most

This alleged family of vehicles was supposedly confirmed by GM President Mark Reuss when he spoke recently at a corporate event. The exec kept many of the key details close to the vest, but Reuss also was confident in other details.
“What comes after this, whether it’s called a Bolt or not, will be a family of things that is low-priced,” Reuss told InsideEVs. “And when I say family, they won’t be adopted. They’ll be in the same vein of size and price.”

Price will undoubtedly be the key thing here since it has dogged GM’s first wave of EV launches. While the Ultium platform has proven to be very flexible and allowed the company to produce a wide range of vehicles, many of them have price tags that cater to the wealthy and put them out of reach of the majority of buyers. The company has just now begun to address this with the Equinox and Blazer EVs but the company lacks a true family of gateway EVs for customers to purchase (the Bolt excluded.)
Hybrids could still play a role
While GM’s reported plan to enter the affordable EV sector could help it in the short term, it also clashes with the company’s separate plan to reinvigorate its fortunes in the hybrid vehicle market. Currently, GM is one of the only automakers to not offer any form of hybrid vehicle and hasn’t done so since the Chevrolet Volt ended production.
The ensuing all in gambit on EVs has soured the mood of some of its customers and there have been rumblings of GM getting back into the hybrid vehicle market to try and give customers a viable bridge into its EV lineup. GM has also been tight lipped abotu those plans too but with market conditions rapidly shifting and demand for current EVs souring, GM will need to adjust to help it stay on par with rivals.
