Buick has been a brand that feels like its been lost in the proverbial weeds. While GM’s other main brands have gotten some form of EV, Buick is still soldiering on with a full lineup of SUVs that lack any form of electrification.
The brand has recorded strong sales but the all-in push on SUVs has made some Buick purists (including this author) very unhappy with sedans being pitched to the curb to get the SUV heavy lineup they were trying to achieve. A new report suggests Buick could get a new sedan bringing the brand back to a segment it abandoned in 2020.
A return to form?

This latest report stems from a prior series of rumors that began circulating this fall with GM Authority claiming GM was seeking to broaden its lineup with two new passenger cars. One was expected to be the next-generation Cadillac CT5 which would allow Cadillac to build on the surprisingly strong sales the model has achieved. The second vehicle however was a mystery.
The site has now followed up on these claims and says the second car will be a Buick offering. If Buick and GM do pull the trigger, this would be the first sedan for the brand since the Regal ended production back in 2020. The rumored sedan would be built on GM’s new Alpha 2-2 platform an updated version of the Alpha 2 architecture seen in the CT4 and CT5.
The Buick version will help soak up some of the costs of development with the sales for this model appealing to a slightly larger marketing demographic. This will be especially important since the smaller CT4 is leaving the market after this year and GM needs some form of logical reasoning to continue producing the CT5.
What’s in a name?
The report doesn’t dive into what names are being proposed, but Buick will certainly have plenty to choose from if it goes through their moniker library. The Regal and the Lacrosse were the last two sedans Buick sold but while the Regal seems like a proverbial shoo-in there are some other sleeper picks lurking beneath the surface.
One of these is the Park Avenue. The Park Avenue was last seen in the early 2000s and while the model was known for its tendency to attract the elderly to Buick showrooms, a revived version could resonate with older millenials especially those who have fond memories of growing up with a Park Avenue in the family driveway.
The Park Avenue also had a long history of representing Buick’s flagship models and a reborn version would help give the Enclave a good dance partner in Buick showrooms. Later Park Avenues had a supercharged engine and the Alpha 2-2 underpinnings could help create a similar model albeit with turbocharging this time around.
When could we see it?
Regardless of whatever name it ends up with, buyers interested in a Buick sedan may have to wait awhile before something tangible rises to the surface. GM for its part has adopted the tried and true method of issuing no comment when asked to verify the rumors.
We suspect part of the proposal process is also trying to figure out what pool of potential rivals this alleged sedan would target. GM knows Buick would have to build up lost ground after being absent from the sedan market for so long and part of this will include luring former Buick sedan owners back into the fold. Buick for its part still sells sedans in China with the L7 leading the charge there.
